Austria remains one of the most attractive countries to move to, thanks to its cultural richness and stability, which rank it among the most livable countries in the world, with Vienna at the top. However, with its advantages comes the paperwork too, with a series of required documents and formalities that must be completed before relocating. 

For individuals from non-EU countries, such as those in the Western Balkans and Türkiye, a specific list of documents is required.  

Below is a list of essential documents you need to provide before and after moving to Austria as a person coming from non-EU countries, including Albania, Kosovo, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Türkiye: 

Check your passport's expiry date

Remember: visas are often issued only until the passport’s expiration date, even if you applied for a more extended period. A soon-to-expire passport could result in rejection.

Apply for a visa (if required)

In the case of Türkiye, which does not have visa liberalisation with Austria, you must apply for a visa at the Austrian Embassy in your home country to grant you legal entry into Austria.

For stays longer than 3 months, you need a residence permit

Book an appointment with the local authority (ex, for Vienna: the MA35) before relocating, as waiting times can take weeks.

Register your address at “Meldeamt” for the Meldezettel, proof of residence in Austria

The Meldezettel serves as official proof of address for opening a bank account, getting health insurance, signing up for utilities, and applying for residence permits.  It is also required when applying for job positions. If you want to secure a job as a person from a non-EU country, you will need to present your Meldezettel at the Austrian Employment Service (AMS) to obtain a work permit.

Other supporting documents for the residence permit

·         Proof of health insurance.

·         Proof of sufficient financial means (funds).

When applying for a residence permit, ensure that you submit all required documents to the Austrian authorities, as the specific requirements may vary depending on the type of permit. Failing to provide the necessary documents can delay the approval process.
