The University of Vienna has called on its students and staff to join a demonstration against the federal government’s planned university funding. In a message to students, the rectorate says the government's so-called stable budget of 16 billion euros is, in real terms, a cut of at least ten per cent.

The rectorate argues that rising costs for personnel, energy, infrastructure, and digitalisation mean universities can no longer absorb this through efficiency gains. Instead, it says, universities would have to scale back operations, putting heavy pressure on the quality of teaching and learning. It also warns that deep cuts squander opportunities for the next generation and weaken Austria’s position as a hub for science and business.

The university is organising the demonstration together with the Austrian Universities Conference (uniko), the ÖH Federal Representation and the ÖH at the University of Vienna. As in May, the rectorate says the university community wants to send a clear message: high-quality research and teaching require sufficient, reliable funding.

The demonstration starts today at 3:00 p.m. with the meeting point in front of TU Wien at Karlsplatz. The rectorate adds that every participant counts.
