HAJDE has obtained data from the Embassy of the Republic of Kosovo in Vienna, coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora and the Central Election Commission. The figures indicate a considerable increase in the number of citizens registered to vote in person at the diplomatic mission.

According to information confirmed by the chargé d'affaires at the Kosovo Embassy in Austria, Albinot Bimbashi, a total of 1,125 voters have registered to cast their ballots in person at the Kosovo Embassy in Vienna for the June 7 elections. In addition, 3,308 Kosovo citizens residing in Austria have registered to vote by mail.

Voter interest in Austria has been on a steady upward trajectory across the last three electoral processes. In the parliamentary elections of February 8, 2025, the first time citizens abroad were able to vote at a physical polling station, 941 people in Austria had registered for in-person voting, of whom 732 actually cast their votes, representing a turnout rate of 77.8%.

In the snap elections of December 28, 2025, the number of voters at the Kosovo Embassy in Vienna dropped to 431, down from 532 registered. That lower turnout is widely attributed to the elections having been held at year's end, when travel from the diaspora to Kosovo increases significantly.

The next snap elections will be held in Kosovo on June 7, 2026, with voting abroad taking place one day earlier.

These elections are already seeing a marked increase in registered voters compared to the previous two cycles. According to data published by Kosovo's Central Election Commission, the overall number of diaspora voters registered for the June 7 extraordinary elections has also risen.

The CEC has announced that a total of 109,696 Kosovo citizens living abroad have registered to vote worldwide. Of these, 81,901 have opted for postal voting, 2,855 have chosen to send their ballot package directly to the CEC's postal address, and 24,940 have registered to vote in person at one of the diplomatic missions.

How Voting Will Work in Austria

According to the Kosovo Embassy in Austria, in-person voting will be held exclusively at the Embassy of the Republic of Kosovo in Vienna, located at Prinz-Eugen-Straße 8–10, A-1040 Vienna. Voters will be able to cast their ballots by presenting one of the following valid Kosovo identity documents: a national ID card, a passport, or a driver's license.

The process of appointing the election commissioners who will oversee the voting is expected to be completed within the deadlines set out in the Activity Plan of the responsible institutions, according to chargé d'affaires Albinot Bimbashi.

The increase in registration numbers and strong turnout in the last two electoral cycles confirm that the Kosovo diaspora in Austria remains a meaningful force in Kosovo's democratic processes. It is worth noting that Austria is one of the few countries in the world where obtaining dual citizenship is extremely difficult, meaning that many people of Kosovar origin who hold Austrian citizenship are effectively unable to participate in elections in their homeland.
