Four skiers died after an avalanche hit a group of seven off-piste skiers on the 2,150-metre Finsterkopf peak in the Grossarl Valley in the Salzburg region, rescuers said. The remaining members of the group were seriously injured. Earlier, a woman was also killed in an avalanche in the nearby Bad Hofgastein area, the Guardian reports.

Later in the day, three Czech ski tourers were buried and killed by an avalanche in the municipality of Pusterwald in Styria. “Despite immediate rescue efforts, the three individuals were found dead,” police said in a statement, adding that their four companions were evacuated and given medical care.

Authorities warned the situation remained “precarious” after 20 to 50 centimetres of fresh snow fell on poorly bonded older layers, increasing the risk of further slides. A similar fatal avalanche was reported in Switzerland on Friday, killing a German man.
