Born in Tirana, Eno Peçi discovered his passion for dance at an early age. As a young boy, he joined the Tirana Ballet Academy, where he took his first steps toward a dream that would eventually take him far from his homeland. His path, however, was far from easy. The turmoil of 1997–1998 in Albania made it impossible for him to continue his education there.

“The only option was to leave Albania,” he recalls.

Thus, in 2000, at just 18 years old, Eno moved to Austria and, without delay, enrolled in the ballet school of the Vienna State Opera. The foundation he had received in Tirana proved decisive for his professional development.

“In Tirana, we were trained in the traditional Russian school method, which established a firm foundation for my work as a dancer,” Eno explains, adding that in Vienna he learned contemporary techniques that helped him grow artistically.

Between prejudice and perseverance

The journey toward rising on the stage of the Vienna State Opera was anything but easy. Coming from Albania at a time when the country carried a negative image often meant facing additional barriers and prejudice.

“We didn’t have a good reputation as a society back then, but things have changed, and our dignity has been restored,” he says.

Stereotypes had followed him even in his homeland, albeit of a different kind. Social perceptions toward male ballet dancers were often marked by gender discrimination.

“There was always the stereotype that ballet is for women, or for homosexuals,” Eno says, noting that decades of communist isolation and repression had left society backwards in its thinking.

Vienna opened new horizons for him- not only in dance techniques but also in social mentality, breaking down such barriers.

“Ballet is an extremely demanding art that requires great dedication. The moment of artistic explosion on stage is something not everyone experiences, and it has nothing to do with gender or sexual orientation,” he emphasises.

From student to soloist

The process of artistic maturation was challenging. Eno recalls that ballet turned out to be very different from what he had initially imagined.

“When I started school, I realised ballet required rigorous study, precise method, discipline, specific clothing, and classical music. I wasn’t sure at first whether I would like all of it,” he admits.

Great dancers such as Rudolf Nureyev and Vladimir Vasiliev became primary sources of inspiration, motivating him to raise his ambitions and pursue excellence.

He began his career at the Vienna State Opera as a corps de ballet member, advanced to demi-soloist, and today performs as a soloist. His repertoire spans various genres, from classical and modern to character ballet, which, as he says, has shaped him into a complete artist.

“I have performed negative, comic, and romantic roles. Playing diverse characters helps you grow not only technically, but artistically, and that has been very important for me,” he notes.

Artistic identity

But who is Eno Peçi on stage?

“Regardless of which stage I’m on, I am always in my own artistic world. I’m neither Albanian nor Viennese, I am Eno. My identity is an artistic one,” he says proudly.

Art is the key that connects the countries

In honour of Albania's 113th anniversary of independence, Eno has prepared the choreography for a performance he will present tonight at the Ehrbar Saal in Vienna, together with other Albanian artists. The project was initiated by the pianist Elvina Gurra from Tirana. The performers will also include the tenor Valon Imeri, the soprano Gesu Zefin, the dancer Joni Österlund, and the contrabass Rodrigo Sámanos.
The programme features works by well-known composers such as Chopin, Schubert and Verdi, as well as by Albanian composers such as Avni Mula, Loka Gjoka, Çesk Zadeja, and others. This Albanian evening will include dance, piano, and singing, all performed in Albanian.

“Art creates significant connections between cultures,” says the artist. “I always try to build cultural bridges between Albania and Austria, because through art, bridges of communication are created.”

From dancer to choreographer

Since 2009, Eno Peçi has also pursued a career as a choreographer. His works have been staged at the Vienna State Opera, including Herzblume and Petruschka. In 2018 and 2020, he choreographed the opening ceremonies of the Vienna Opera Ball and worked for the Vienna State Ballet.

Beyond Vienna, his choreography has travelled across Europe, to Germany, Slovenia, Hungary, and Switzerland, as well as to his homeland, Albania and Kosovo.

In the upcoming season, the Vienna State Ballet will premiere its latest work, “The First Nutcracker for the Nest.” Eno is working with ballet academy students, combining classical tradition with his own contemporary interpretation.

“The foundation will be classical, but with a contemporary approach. The concept, idea, and musical structure are entirely mine,” he explains.

Awards and vision

His work has been honoured with numerous international awards, though Eno remains humble.

“It’s gratifying, but not essential. I don’t work for titles or medals. My goal is to reach the artistic peak, to continue learning, and to create new works,” he says.

His message to young talents is clear and direct:

“More passion, perseverance, and love for the profession. In art, there are no limits, but the greatest danger for an artist is entering a comfort zone. Art must preserve its values, even in a time when everything is becoming a business,” concludes the artist.
