The University of Vienna is continuing to strengthen its position in international university evaluations, maintaining a place among the world’s top 100 institutions in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Its progress reflects a longer-term upward trajectory.

The university has also performed strongly across other major global evaluations. In the 2026 QS World University Rankings, it ranked 140th, while the Shanghai Ranking placed it in the 101–150 group. The university is the highest-ranked Austrian institution in all three major rankings.

Reflecting on the latest results, Helmut Kern, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the University of Vienna, wrote on LinkedIn:

“A great moment for Austrian universities! I am particularly happy that ‘my’ University of Vienna retains its place among the world’s top 100, at 95th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027.”

Kern also highlighted the wider performance of Austrian higher education, noting the rise of the Medical University of Vienna and the entry of BOKU University into the ranking. He described the results as “a strong achievement” for a small country competing in an increasingly international higher-education environment.

The University of Vienna itself emphasises that rankings should be viewed primarily through long-term trends, since methodologies can change from year to year. Its sustained movement upward across THE, QS and Shanghai nevertheless points to growing international visibility in research, teaching and academic cooperation.
