Another theatrical production in the Albanian language is finding its way onto international stages.

Inspired by the classic drama of Georg Büchner and adapted by playwright Jack Thorne, this play explores the story of an individual oppressed by social reality. Through a modern approach, “Woyzeok” transforms into a strong reflection on dehumanisation, injustice, and the psychological pressure experienced by individuals in a society that is often merciless.

Zana Hoxha’s direction focuses on the protagonist's emotional and psychological state, creating a dark, symbolic atmosphere on stage. The visual elements, designed by Grace Rumsey, reinforce the sense of isolation and loss of identity, turning the story into an intense experience for the audience.

This play is not only a personal tragedy but also a mirror of universal issues affecting modern societies. It raises important questions about mental health, collective responsibility, and how individuals are treated in difficult circumstances.

The organiser of this cultural event, Ermal Vejsa, from the organisation Ká, says that bringing “Woyzeok” to Vienna aims to promote theatrical art from Kosovo and to build bridges of cultural cooperation between Kosovo and Austria. “We decided to bring the play ‘Woyzeok’ to Vienna because it addresses universal themes such as social injustice, psychological pressure, and human dignity, which are highly relevant today.”

Despite logistical and organisational challenges, the project has been realised with the support of institutions and international partners. “Bringing a production from Kosovo to Vienna requires extensive organisation and coordination on many levels, from transporting a troupe of 25 people and stage elements to administrative and financial aspects. It is not an easy process, but thanks to the support of the Arbeiterkammer, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo, and the Embassy of Kosovo in Vienna, we have successfully carried out this project,” says Vejsa.

Interest in this performance has been high, not only from the Albanian community in Vienna but also from Austrian and international audiences. This demonstrates that the themes addressed by “Woyzeok” are universal and manage to communicate beyond linguistic and cultural boundaries, Vejsa concludes.

The play will be performed in Albanian, with English subtitles for the broader public, making it accessible to a wider audience. This marks another important step in presenting Albanian culture on the international stage and strengthening cultural dialogue in Europe.
