The new automated system is designed to enhance border management and security across Europe by electronically registering travellers from countries outside the European Union or Schengen Area, who are visiting the Schengen zone for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180 days (six months).

Under the EES, passengers will be required to present their travel documents and complete a one-time biometric registration, which includes the collection of four fingerprints and a facial image. This digital record will replace the manual passport stamping process currently used at EU borders.

Importantly, EU citizens, residents, and holders of long-stay visas will be exempt from the new registration requirement.

Authorities have warned that the new system may initially extend processing times at border control points, particularly during the first weeks of implementation. Travellers are therefore strongly advised to arrive at the airport well in advance to allow sufficient time for check-in, security screening, and the new border control procedures.

Failure to plan accordingly could result in delays or missed flights, officials caution.
